Congratulations to our Centenarian!
The Goan Gymkhana marks an important historical event with the 100th birthday of our member Maria Da Gama-Couto, daughter of a prominent founder member C.F Da Gama.
‘Marie’ as she is known is the sister of Euclid Da Gama and Rui Da Gama.
Euclid Da Gama is remembered as a staunch GG member and a top class tennis player, who often played in the Kenya Open with his partner Jos D’ Souza.
Maria Da Gama – Couto. ‘Marie to those who know her, is the second child of Caetano Francisco and Fremot Da Gama. She was born in Goa, studied at the Dr. Ribeiro Goan School, Nairobi and thereafter completed her studies at St. Joseph’s Convent, Karachi. Marie returned to her village, Assagao, where she taught for 16 years, and is fondly remembered as ‘Miss Gama’ by her students, many of whom are now over 75 years old!
She joined her brothers Euclid and Rui Da Gama in Nairobi in 1963 and she worked for the Ministry of Works.
In 1964 she married Francisco Couto after his persistent courting of eight years. A love story which is still blooming, thanks to Fanchic’s constant love and devotion to Marie and their joint passion for gardening. Together, they were enrolled as Goan Gymkhana members on December 1, 1966 and where Fanchic frequented well into the 80’s.
Marie has had a colourful 100 years. She enjoys flowers and chocolates and passes her time reading and watching National Geographic TV programs, highlighting her keen interest in nature and the environment. This obviously also kept Francisco on his toes. She also enjoys her doting grandchildren who keep her amused with their stories and youthful pranks, while her daughter Carmen and son-in-law Gerald keep a watchful eye over her.
Marie continues to enjoy her quiet life surrounded by love of her family and friends.
On behalf of the entire membership of The Goan Gymkhana, the Trustees and Management congratulate Marie on this amazing milestone in her life.
